Nagy József avignoni sikeréről számolt be a Libération

Last landscape

Josef Nadj defines the project Last Landscape as “a self portrait facing a landscape". But the landscape under consideration here is neither an abstraction nor a generality. It is an existing landscape a few kilometres from his small hometown, Kanjiza, in Yugoslavia’s Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. A landscape - only kilometres from the border with Hungary on the North and Rumania on the East - that has enthralled him since childhood.

The Landscape
Referred to as “the desert", this landscape with its peculiar characteristics is lost in the middle of Pannonia - a vast plain that was once a sea, of which Lake Balaton might be the liquid “imprint".
Hardly a tree on the horizon, but an expanse of wild grass gripping the clayey low lands, absolutely arid, where nevertheless a sleeping spring emerges from time to time. In manifold legends it is said this spring has miraculous virtues.

Near by is a small structure from which, by a system of canalization, the spring water once flowed towards Kanjiza. But also enshrouded by the grass are burial mounds, whose existence credits the idea that thousands of years ago this “desert" and its magical spring was a religious site for nomadic tribes.

The region’s climate is continental, marked by diluvial rains and intensive heat or cold; the landscape varies in function of the seasons and climatic conditions - either the rainwater is retained at the deepest part of the depression, forming a shallow pond, totally opaque, grey-green and clayey, or under the effect of the heat and frost, the clay dries out and cracks cross its surface.

Self Portrait
In the course of recent years, Josef Nadj’s stage creations can be divided into two distinct axes: on one hand, group pieces inspired by the life and work of an artist (with one exception, all are writers) and on the other hand, small forms (solos and duets) that pick up the thread of Nadj’s earliest choreographies in which the place of autobiography and personal experience is more exposed, more visible.

Last Landscape belongs to the second category. A self-portrait, voluntarily incomplete, in the manner of those tableaux or literary (self-)fictions that portray the painter in his studio or the writer facing the empty page... All in all it’s a self-portrait of the artist at work, where the “work in progress" is moreover considered as a return to the sources of his art.

In this way Josef Nadj conceives Last Landscape as a sort of break, both reflexive and fertile. An exploration concerning the origin of movement, and more precisely, concerning the origin of his movement. Because for Nadj the question of origins (both in the larger sense and in the sense of his own personal origins) is a central preoccupation.

Process
The starting point for Last Landscape is the concept of landscape, the idea of this specific landscape, like a “primitive scene" - in other words, as a site where movement is rooted. This deserted site, as metaphor for the most extreme sober and stark paring down to essentials, becomes the site for exploration beyond all artifice, all conceptualization, all intellectual elaboration. In this direct and concrete relationship between man and the world - in this case Josef Nadj and the landscape of his childhood - this primary and “ultimate" landscape, representing for him the synthesis, an ideal in any creation, between “material and concept".

To begin with, this exploration develops from sensation, the perception of this specific fragment of nature - a question of “immersing" oneself in the landscape, allowing oneself to be absorbed by it in an attempt to understand, understand its story and its repercussions, the present and its most minute variations. Then follows the immediate translation of this sensation into movement that is the echo, the extension and something of the emanation of the landscape itself.

The next step consists of memorizing this “original movement", interiorizing it to be able to carry it with oneself in order to be able to realize and renew it outside of the landscape - in the studio or on stage. Or - symmetrically - to be able to recreate elsewhere, in the studio or on stage, the feeling of this space.

Last Landscape

Created in duet and in intimate correspondence with the percussionist Vladimir Tarasov, Last Landscape is in some ways the “spirit of a site". It is an echo and reflection, by means of drawing, movement and sound of an experience that arises from interior necessity - the intimate experience of a return to sources.

But it is also a landscape, an evocation of a natural setting in all its varied states, and the restitution of a creative journey, condensed and projected into the present with the representation of a real space and a mental space, a multiple landscape, visual and audible, that is composed and decomposed on stage while it is tracing its own traces.

Finally, reflection conducted by a choreographer about movement and its origin, Last Landscape also comports references to cycles - nature, seasons, artistic creation - in other words, to perpetual motion and the notions of fading away and renewal.

Last Landscape, continued...
The project Last Landscape encompasses both the stage piece described here, for a dancer and a musician (premiere at the Festival of Avignon in 2005), and also a film, Last Landscape - Josef Nadj by Josef Nadj (52 minutes - 2006), which will present in parallel the piece and its underpinning, in other words, its genesis, its sources and its process of creation.
Myriam Blœdé

Josef Nadj

“Since the moment I discovered that a person climbing on stage creates a paradox, a mystery that remains indecipherable, I have fastened myself to this theatrical space. But what is it in this space that captures my attention? - The subtle relationship created between living bodies. The image of the body. First an image, not in the pictorial sense, but rather the image that comes into being based on a purely corporal sensibility - which often results from ambiguous situations, from a certain veiled thought process. But from what depths surge movements capable of creating this language, so familiar and yet so strange, that we share the moment the curtain rises? What is this language speaking about? - Perhaps of a certain truth hidden behind all our masks and behind all our gestures, a truth about which man more voluntarily remains silent."
Josef Nadj

Josef Nadj, French citizen, was born in 1957 in Kanjiza, in Vojvodina, a region of ex-Yugoslavia. He attended art school and the University of Budapest where he studied art and music history. At the same time, he took classes in wrestling and martial arts and studied self-expression by way of movement and theater classes. On the advice of his drama teacher, he left Budapest for Paris, where he arrived in 1980. He studied at the Ecole Internationale de Mimodrame de Marcel Marceau from 1980 to 1982, then from 1982 to 1983, at the school of Etienne Decroux. At the same time, he took dance classes from Yves Cassati and Larri Leong, as well as with Japanese dancers. He discovered the choreographic universes of several choreographers, taking part in their pieces - Sidonie Rochon’s “Papier froissé", Mark Tompkins’ “Trahison man", Catherine Diverres’ “L’arbitre des élégances", and François Verret’s “Illusion Comique" and “La" (commissioned by the GRCOP).

1983 to 1988 taught dance for the contemporary dance association Graffiti at Aulnay-sous-Bois (Seine Saint-Denis)
1986 founded his company Théâtre JEL
1987 creation of his first piece “Canard pékinois"
1988 first residence at the Centre de Production Chorégraphique of Orléans
1989 residence at the Quartz in Brest
1990 became “associated creator" of the Centre de Production Chorégraphique of Orléans for three years
1991 directed the film “Tractatus bestial", during a residence at the TNDl at Châteauvallon
1994 residence at the Théâtre National de Bretagne in Rennes
Since 1995, Josef Nadj has been the director of the Centre Choregraphique National d’Orléans

Exhibitions
In November 1996, in parallel with his choreographic work, Josef Nadj presented his first exhibition, Installations, consisting of a series of sculptures created around the notion of time, at the Carré Saint-Vincent-Scčne Nationale of Orléans. This exhibition constitutes above all an area of meditation, provoking a wider reflection on the body of his choreographic works. These sculptures, along with drawings and photographs, have since been shown at the Théatre Vidy in Lausanne in December 1997, at the Centre Culturel Jean Gagnant in Limoges in January 1998, at the Galerie du Lys in Paris in March 1998, and at the Phénix de Valenciennes in February 1999.
In January 2000, Josef Nadj’s Miniatures were exposed in Douai. These India ink drawings resemble little notes or sketches, almost an intimate personal diary. This exhibition was also shown later in 2000 at the Galerie du Lys in Paris as part of a collective exhibition, at the bookstore Les Temps Modernes in Orleans, at Châlon sur Saőne and at Remscheid, then in 2002 at the Festival d’Avignon, Bruges and at the Parc de la Villette, in 2003 at the Volcan-Scčne Nationale of Le Havre, and in 2004 at the Trident-Scčne Nationale of Cherbourg, at the Mimos festival in Périgueux, at the Reggio Emilia in Italy and at the Carré Saint-Vincent-Scčne Nationale of Orléans.

Collaborators

Rémi Nicolas (born in 1952)
French lighting designer and scenographer

“You might as well say that a finished and stable image clips the wings of the imagination"  - Gaston Bachelard

A passionate self-taught career has led Rémi Nicolas from the design and execution of lighting/scenography to the development of stage environments for theater, dance and music.
Consistent collaborator of Dominique Bagouet (1976-1984), François Verret (1982-1993) and Josef Nadj (since 1990), he has also worked with Brigitte Lefčvre, Peter Goss, Suzan Linke, Régine Chopinot, Bernardo Montet, Joëlle Bouvier and Régis Obadia, among others.

With Bagouet, his lighting became a necessary vector for understanding performances, even with his insistence on sober composition. For Nicolas the question is to marry space, matter and light. With Verret, he deepened his art, evolving towards a synthesis where the imagery is treated on all levels. Constantly exploring, he nourishes his work with painting, photography and the work of kinetic artists such as Nicolas Schöffer and Agarn. He doesn’t light the dancers, he baths them in a particular space befitting to revealing the aura of the choreography. He uses counterpoint and relatively strong colors. The substance of his lighting is mobile and rhythmic. It filters in and resonates, cutting shadows that play with fantasy worlds: characteristics forming a luminous visual echo of Nadj’s world.

Beginning in 1971, Rémi Nicolas created the visual imagery for the group Le Spectaculaire Détergent and then for P. Vian, C. Couture, B. Lubat, Yumi Nara and Joëlle Léandre.

He has also participated in the Rencontres Audiovisuelles of Chalon-sur-Saőne, the Rencontres Internationales de la Photo at Arles, Visa pour l’image, and has designed scenography and lighting for Cartier.

For the stage he has collaborated with Grand Magasin, P. Debauche, P. Adrien, P. Madral, and C. Hiegel (Comédie Française).
He created Le faire ŕ dissous in Châlon-sur-Saőne; Le Miroir des Illusions in 1996 at the French Institue in Kyioto, Japan; and Le Labyrinthe vertical for Le Printemps de Cahors in 1998.
He has also collaborated with Anne-Marie Pécheur, Joęl Hubault, and P. Houillet.

Twice recipient of fellowships Villa Médicis Hors les Murs [Villa Médicis Outside Its Walls], he was in residence in New York in 1980-81, and then in Republic of Georgia at the Gruzia film studio in Tblisi. In 1996 he was in residence at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyota, Japan.

His recent productions include:
Journal d’un inconnu (Josef Nadj, 2002)
Les Philosophes (Josef Nadj, 2002),

Nagy József életrajz
A JEL színház alapítójáról

Nagy József 1957-ben született a délvidéki Magyarkanizsán. Legtöbbször élő zenével hangsúlyozva e szakralitást, amit eddig a kifejezetten magyar zenei anyanyelvre támaszkodó kortárs zenészekkel: Szabados György, Kovács Tickmayer István, Mezei Szilárd együtteseivel valósított meg.
Nagy József 2002-ben ünnepelte munkásságának 15 éves évfordulóját. A 15 év alatt olyan immár színháztörténet alkotások születtek mint: A hét rinocéroszbőr, Commedia Tempio, A kormányzó halála, Woyzeck, Orfeusz létrái, Utazók, Habakukk kommentárok, Virrasztók, Filozófusok, Éjfél után, Egy ismeretlen naplója...

A Franciaországban működő magyarkanizsai születésű világhírű színész-rendező Nagy József nyerte 2001-ben a legrangosabb európai színházi-díjat.
Az általa vezetett orléans-i táncszínházat (Centré Chorégraphique d,National Orléans) méltán tartják a mai kortárs színházak egyik legkiválóbbjaként. Rendszeresen fellép minden európai országban, Észak és Dél-Amerikában, Ausztráliában, Oroszországban, Japánban, Izraelben......
