Melyik álmát vitte magával a sírba?
Alighanem az Attilát.
Gyerekkorától az akart lenni. Egyszer már belekóstolt. Egyszer már elmondhatta - igaz olaszul - "csillag esik, föld remeg, jött éve csudáknak...“ Igen, idézhetett a Buda halálából. Idézhetett, de az nem volt teljes öröm. Nem volt végtelen puszta, millió lovas, nyílfelhõ és nagyromantika.
Sziklán állt és előtte csapkodott a tenger. Már járni is alig tudott, mégis Attiláról álmodott. Így hát őt is hármaskoporsóba kellett volna temetni és lenyilazni minket, túlélőket. És csak onnét tudnánk, az utolsók, hogy hol a sírja: ott lebeg fölötte a saskeselyű.

Which dream of his did he take with him to the grave?
Probably the myth of Attila. That was what he wanted to be, ever since he was a child. He even tasted it once. He could once recite, although in Italian, the quote from The Death of King Buda by János Arany: "stars fall and the earth shakes, foresee the miracles...“ Yes, he could quote it, but his delight was imperfect. He missed the infinite plains, the million horsemen, the cloud of arrows and the vast romanticism. He stood on a cliff, the sea lashing before him. He could barely walk then, and still dreamed of Attila. Thus, he, too, should have been buried in three coffins, and us survivors shot with arrows. The last ones, then, would only know the place of his grave by seeing the mythical vulture floating above it.
József Madaras (1937-2007) Hungarian actor, holder of the Kossuth Award, died on 24 April 2007.
